Diesel is a depreciating asset the moment it enters your tank. Here's how long it really lasts in Australian conditions — and what decides whether you get six months or twelve.

Under good conditions, diesel can be stored for 6 to 12 months before quality starts to fall away. In hot Australian conditions, that window can shrink to as little as 6 months — and poor storage can ruin fuel much faster.

If your business keeps bulk diesel on site — for machinery, generators, harvest season or a transport fleet — the fuel in your tank is a depreciating asset. Understanding what degrades diesel, and how to slow it down, protects both the fuel and every engine it goes into.

The Short Answer: 6–12 Months, Depending on Temperature

Fuel industry guidance is consistent: diesel stored at or below 20°C in a clean, sealed tank remains usable for around 12 months. At storage temperatures above 30°C — common in sheds, paddocks and mine sites across much of Australia — expect closer to 6 months before degradation becomes measurable.

3 Factors Temperature, water and contamination decide the outcome

Three factors decide where your fuel sits in that range:

  • Temperature — heat accelerates the oxidation reactions that break diesel down.
  • Water — condensation and rain ingress feed microbial growth and corrosion.
  • Contamination — dirt, rust and biological material entering through vents, fills and dirty transfer equipment.

What Actually Happens as Diesel Ages

Diesel reacts with oxygen over time, forming gums and sediments that darken the fuel and block filters and injectors. Modern common-rail engines run injector tolerances measured in microns, so even mild oxidation shows up as hard starting, smoke and power loss.

Water Contamination

Every time a tank breathes through its vent, moist air enters and condenses on the internal walls. Water pools at the bottom of the tank, corrodes steel from the inside, and creates the interface layer where microbial contamination takes hold.

Biological

Diesel Bug

“Diesel bug” is the common name for the bacteria and fungi that live in the water layer and feed on the fuel above it. An infestation produces sludge that blocks filters overnight and acids that attack tank walls. Once established, it requires biocide treatment and often a full tank clean.

Biodiesel Blends Age Faster

Most Australian diesel contains a biodiesel component (commonly up to B5). Biodiesel is hygroscopic — it absorbs water — and biodegrades more readily, so blended fuel has a shorter storage life than the mineral diesel of decades past. If you plan to store fuel for more than a few months, ask your supplier about the blend you're buying.

Signs Your Stored Diesel Has Degraded

  • Fuel is darker than fresh diesel, or looks hazy/cloudy
  • Sour or rotten-egg smell instead of the normal solvent smell
  • Black or brown sludge on filters, or filters blocking earlier than usual
  • Visible water or dark layers when you sample from the bottom of the tank
  • Engines that ran fine on fresh fuel now hard-starting, smoking or down on power

If you see these signs, don't keep running equipment on the fuel — test it. Fuel polishing can often recover marginal diesel; heavily degraded or infested fuel may need professional disposal.

How to Extend Diesel Shelf Life

Store it in the right tank

The single biggest factor is the tank itself. A sealed, purpose-built tank with proper venting and filtration will keep fuel usable for years longer than a repurposed drum or an ageing single-skin tank with a loose lid. Self-bunded diesel tanks provide a sealed, fully contained environment, and larger FUELTAINER self-bunded tanks offer the same protection at bulk-storage volumes. Keep water out — and get it out

  • Fit desiccant breathers or quality vent caps so the tank breathes dry air.

  • Drain or pump water from the bottom of the tank on a regular schedule — monthly checks are a good baseline.

Filter on the way in and the way out

Fit diesel fuel filters and water separators on your dispensing line so contamination never reaches your equipment, and filter fuel on delivery if your supplier chain is long.

Rotate stock — first in, first out

Size your storage to your actual consumption so fuel turns over within its shelf life. A tank you refill every 8 weeks will never have a fuel-age problem; a tank sized for a year of storage needs active management. Inspect and maintain the tank
