The tank-within-a-tank explained

A self bunded fuel tank is a double-walled storage system — an inner tank that holds the fuel, surrounded by an outer containment wall. The space between the two walls acts as a built-in bund, designed to catch any leaks or spills from the inner tank before they can reach the ground or groundwater.

Under AS 1940:2017 — the Australian Standard governing the storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids — secondary containment must hold at least 110% of the inner tank's capacity. Self bunded tanks meet this requirement by design, which means no separate engineered bund, no concrete works, and no additional civil approvals in most above-ground installations.

Why this matters in 2026: The current fuel crisis has seen a significant surge in businesses seeking to install on-site diesel storage quickly. Self bunded tanks are the fastest compliant path to fuel security — delivered ready to operate, with no civil construction required before filling.

  • No separate bund needed — 110% containment is built into the tank itself, eliminating external civil works and associated cost and delay.
  • AS 1940 compliant out of the box — all A-FLO self bunded tanks are designed to meet the national standard for flammable and combustible liquid storage.
  • Relocatable — above-ground self bunded tanks can be moved as your site requirements change. Ideal for construction projects, exploration camps, and seasonal operations.
  • Pump and FMS ready — configure with your choice of pump package, metering, hose reels, and fuel management system at the point of order.
  • Broad capacity range — A-FLO stocks self bunded options from 200L Utecube ute tanks through to 110,000L Fueltainer systems for large mine sites.
  • Suitable for diesel, ULP, AdBlue, waste oil — different tank families are rated for different products. A-FLO can advise on the right specification for your fluid type.

Applications across industry

Mining & Resources
Remote mine sites and exploration camps require high-volume, relocatable storage. Fueltainer systems (11,000L–110,000L) provide the capacity and mobility mining operations demand — with hi-flow pump packages and FMS integration.

Self bunded fuel tanks — common questions answered

What is a self bunded fuel tank?
A self bunded fuel tank is a double-walled storage tank — a tank within a tank. The inner tank stores the fuel; the outer wall acts as secondary containment, holding at least 110% of the inner tank's capacity in the event of a leak or spill. This design means no separate external bund or concrete containment works are required, significantly simplifying installation and reducing cost.
Are self bunded tanks compliant with AS 1940?
Yes. A-FLO's self bunded fuel tanks are designed and specified to comply with AS 1940:2017 — the Australian Standard for the Storage and Handling of Flammable and Combustible Liquids. The built-in 110% secondary containment meets the bunding requirement of the standard. All tanks come with documentation confirming AS 1940 compliance for your records.
What sizes of self bunded fuel tank does A-FLO offer?
A-FLO's self bunded range covers 200L through to 110,000L across eight product families: Utecube (200L–600L), Fuelcube (1,000L–6,000L), Fuelbox (5,000L–20,000L), Fueltainer (11,000L–110,000L), Fueltainer Diesel/AdBlue Combo, Poly Refueller (5,000L–10,000L), Gencube generator tanks (600L–10,000L), and self bunded bench and waste oil tanks.
Do I need a council or EPA approval to install a self bunded tank?
In many rural and industrial zones, above-ground self bunded tanks can be installed on a prepared hardstand without a formal planning permit. However, requirements vary by state, local council, tank size, and whether any permanent structure is involved. A-FLO recommends confirming your dangerous goods obligations with the relevant state authority and making a single call to your local council's planning department before installation. Our team can assist with this process. Read our compliance guide →
How much diesel am I allowed to store on site?
There is no single national storage limit. Allowable volumes are governed by state and territory dangerous goods legislation, and thresholds that trigger notification or licensing requirements vary by jurisdiction. Most states require some form of notification above approximately 1,000L. A-FLO can assist with determining the specific requirements for your site, volume, and state before you order.
Can I get a self bunded tank with a pump already fitted?
Yes — most A-FLO self bunded tanks are available as configured packages with pump kits, hose reels, filtration, meters, and fuel management systems included. Options include 240V standard pumps, hi-flow 1.5HP sub pumps, 12V and 24V DC pump kits for remote sites, and BSmart, Fluidtrack, or Fluidlink AFM fuel management systems. Specify your requirements at the point of order.
What is the difference between a Fuelcube, Fuelbox, and Fueltainer?
All three are A-FLO self bunded diesel storage products, but they serve different capacity ranges and applications. The Fuelcube (1,000L–6,000L) is a compact, stackable cube tank suited to workshops, depots, and smaller agricultural operations. The Fuelbox (5,000L–20,000L) is a larger format tank with an enclosed pump bay for higher-volume fleet and workshop use. The Fueltainer (11,000L–110,000L) is a containerised, crane-liftable system for remote sites, mine operations, and large construction projects.
Does A-FLO install tanks, or is it supply-only?
A-FLO supplies and installs nationally across all Australian states and territories. Our team manages the full process from site assessment and compliance confirmation through to installation, commissioning, and handover documentation. For installation enquiries contact service@aflo.com.au or call 1300 235 623.
