Frequently Asked Questions
Loxeal Adhesives & Sealants FAQ
What is an anaerobic adhesive and how does it work?
An anaerobic adhesive is a single-component liquid that remains stable in the presence of air (oxygen) but cures to a strong solid when confined between close-fitting metal surfaces in the absence of oxygen. The curing reaction is further accelerated by metal ions — making anaerobic adhesives the technology of choice for threadlocking, thread sealing, retaining cylindrical assemblies and formed-in-place gasketing on metal components. Loxeal anaerobic adhesives are available in a range of strengths, viscosities and temperature ratings to suit different thread sizes, clearances and disassembly requirements.
What is the difference between a threadlocker and a thread sealant?
A threadlocker is applied to threaded fasteners (bolts, screws, studs) to prevent loosening under vibration and dynamic loading — it cures between the thread flanks to create a positive lock. A thread sealant is applied to pipe threads and fittings to create a leak-free pressure seal against liquids and gases — while also locking the fitting against vibration. Do not use a threadlocker as a thread sealant — they are formulated differently. Loxeal supplies both threadlockers and thread sealants, including DVGW-certified grades for gas and WRAS-approved grades for drinking water.
Are Loxeal thread sealants suitable for gas and drinking water installations?
Yes — selected Loxeal anaerobic thread sealants hold DVGW certification for gas distribution installations and WRAS approval for drinking water contact. NSF-certified grades are available for food and beverage processing applications. These certifications are critical for Australian installations where regulatory compliance of pipe sealing compounds is required by gas distributors, water utilities and food processing facility managers. Always confirm the specific product certification against your application's regulatory requirements before use.
How do I choose the right Loxeal threadlocker strength?
Loxeal threadlockers are available in low, medium and high strength grades — the correct choice depends on fastener size, required removal torque and whether the joint needs to be disassembled for service. Low strength (typically blue) suits small fasteners (M6 and below) and applications requiring frequent removal — disassembles with hand tools. Medium strength (typically blue/green) suits M6–M20 fasteners in general engineering — disassembles with standard hand tools. High strength (typically red) suits M20+ fasteners and permanent assemblies — requires heat (250°C) for disassembly. A-FLO can advise on the correct grade for your application — call 1300 235 623.
Can Loxeal adhesives be used on passive or inactive metals?
Anaerobic adhesives cure slower on passive metals (stainless steel, aluminium, zinc, cadmium-plated surfaces) because these metals have fewer active ions to catalyse the curing reaction. For passive metal assemblies, Loxeal recommends applying the appropriate surface conditioner or primer activator to one surface before applying the adhesive — this accelerates curing to achieve full strength within the expected timeframe. Without a primer, cure may be slow or incomplete on passive substrates. A-FLO supplies Loxeal surface conditioners alongside the adhesive range.
